Florida's second sensational, race-tinged murder trial in less than a year is underway. Michael Dunn, a white, 47-year-old software developer,  shot and killed Jordan Davis , a 17-year-old African American, as the teen sat in an SUV with three friends. Charged with first-degree murder, Dunn is pleading self-defense under Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law. He contends that he argued with the teens (over what a witness says he called their " thug music ") and fired on them after he claims he saw Davis brandish a shotgun. Police found no gun at the scene, and  witnesses say  Davis never had one.

When I talk about the founding of Lagos, I do not mean the discovery of the geographical space or the topography known as Lagos. I am talking about the establishment of an ancient port by the Edos in a joint venture with the Portuguese in South Western Nigeria. We now live in a world in which we talk about casual, recreational sex. A young man meets a young woman and says “Nice to meet you, would you like to have dinner, go to a movie, and then have sex.” She says “Sure, why not?” The only thing that is strange is the element of formality in such an encounter. Casual sex is very common in our culture. At one time people thought that you shouldn’t have sex unless you were in love. You shouldn’t have sex until you were prepared for babies. Different African countries are in different situations, and no summit between the United States and that many countries can come up with useful solutions that will work for all 47 countries. What wealthy South Africa has to offer is not the same as what the poorer Tanzania or Kenya can. In fact the smaller countries have as much to fear from a growing and hungry South African economy as from the United States or China. If Obama wants to meet with African presidents, let him visit all 47 capitals, or attend an African Union meeting.

Lagos (AFP) - Tens of thousands of people in Nigeria are missing out on vital services because of conflict, with the areas where Boko Haram operates worst affected, the Red Cross said on Thursday. Two more infants have been infected with a deadly herpes virus in the last three months after undergoing a controversial religious oral circumcision in New York City. The latest cases bring the count to 13 infants since 2000, two of which suffered brain damage and two died from the virus which can rapidly spread throughout its body. The ultra-Orthodox Jewish practice of metzitzah b'peh requires a practitioner to orally suck the baby's penis to 'cleanse' the open wound following its circumcision, making them susceptible to the virus.
